A clinical trial is a type of research study that is done to help learn about new ways to prevent, diagnose or treat a disease. This type of research involves human beings who choose to participate.

Clinical Trials in Thoracic Surgery at UHN

At UHN, the Division of Thoracic Surgery is a leader in advancing care through cutting-edge clinical research. Our team is dedicated to improving outcomes for patients with complex thoracic conditions by developing new treatments and setting global standards in surgical innovation.

Clinical trials are essential because they give patients access to the latest therapies and surgical techniques before they become widely available. They help us discover better ways to treat disease, improve recovery, and enhance quality of life. By participating in research, patients play an active role in shaping the future of care—not just for themselves, but for others around the world.

Our research program covers a wide range of areas, including thoracic cancers, pulmonary hypertension, benign lung and esophageal diseases, and lung transplantation. We conduct studies on lung cancer, malignant pleural mesothelioma, esophageal cancer, sarcoma and colorectal cancer metastases, and recurrent breast cancer. These include prospective clinical trials, retrospective studies, and translational research that bring discoveries from the lab directly to patient care.

Our Lung Transplantation Program is internationally recognized for its research excellence, leading in-house studies and collaborating on industry-sponsored and NIH-funded multi-centre trials. Through these efforts, we aim to deliver better therapies, improve survival, and enhance quality of life for patients worldwide.
